The universe does not like a vacuum

by Zeynep Ölçer 25 Oct 2024

The universe always fills in the gaps; this is a principle that applies to every aspect of our lives. When we let go of old, dysfunctional habits, if we don’t replace them with new ones, those gaps often unknowingly fill with harmful habits or conditions. That’s why it’s important to consciously replace old habits with healthy, beneficial ones.

For example, if you have a habit of sitting in front of the TV right after you get home from work and watching it for hours and you want to quit, you should find an alternative activity to fill the void created by the TV. Filling this void with a habit such as reading a book in the evening, going for a walk, or taking up a new hobby will allow you to spend more quality time. If you do not completely stop watching TV and replace it with something else, you can easily fill your remaining hours with harmful or unnecessary activities.

Similarly, if you want to stop eating unhealthy snacks, it’s important to replace them with a healthy alternative. Swapping chips or chocolate for fruit or yogurt every time you’re hungry will help you fill the void in a healthy way. Over time, by replacing your old habit with a healthy new one, you’ll allow the universe to fill the void in a helpful way.

Another example is for those who want to get rid of social media addiction. If you are constantly spending time on social media and want to reduce it, you need to fill this gap with a quality activity. Taking time to write a journal, meditate or learn new information instead of social media will add positive effects to your life. Not only quitting the time spent on social media, but also filling it with a useful habit will increase your quality of life.

The law of the universe not leaving any gaps also applies to human relationships. For example, if you want to stay away from people who tire you out and drain your energy, make sure to spend time with positive people who will fill the gap they create. If you don’t fill this gap, you will be able to attract people with similar characteristics into your life. A social circle full of people who add value to you, motivate you and support you will replace old harmful relationships and provide you with higher quality relationships.

Finally, you can apply this principle to coping with stress. If you have developed a harmful habit to suppress stress (e.g. overeating) and want to break it, you need to replace it with a healthy stress management tool. Healthy activities such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing techniques, or walking are constructive ways to cope with stress and can fill the void left by the old habit in a positive way.

In short, every habit we abandon and every void we create in our lives is waiting to be filled by the universe with something. If we do not consciously fill this void with healthy habits, it can unknowingly be filled with a new and harmful habit. Therefore, determining the positive habits we will replace in every change process is the key to permanent transformation and well-being.
