Why do things we fear happen to us?

by Zeynep Ölçer 27 Oct 2024

Resistance refers to the intense emotional reactions we have to things we do not want or fear, which attract more of these situations into our lives. This is also explained in daily life with proverbs such as “The grass you do not want grows right under your nose” or “The thing you fear will happen to you”. Because constantly resisting something means inviting it into our lives, rather than engaging in a struggle against it. We can explain this situation with various examples on a biological and mental level.

For example, if you are very anxious about your health and constantly afraid of getting sick, your body will be stressed and your immune system will be weakened. The constant secretion of stress hormones such as cortisol will negatively affect your health and increase your risk of getting sick. In this case, the saying "What you fear will happen" will come true because we can make our fears real by constantly focusing on them.

Another example is the fear of financial hardship. If you are constantly fearing financial hardship with thoughts like, “I won’t have enough money” or “I will be in debt,” this fear is ingrained in your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind can turn these negative thoughts into reality, and you may unknowingly make decisions that will put you in financial difficulty. This is a reflection of the proverb, “The grass you don’t want will grow right under your nose,” because by focusing on the situation you don’t want, you are actually attracting it to you.

A similar situation applies to social relationships. Let’s say you are very afraid of rejection when meeting new people. When you focus heavily on this fear, you may start to exhibit unnatural behaviors. For example, you constantly put yourself on the defensive and become tense as if you expect the other party to reject you. This can cause other people to stay away from you when communicating. Thus, the saying “What you fear will happen to you” comes to life here as well.

Another example is the fear of failure. If you are afraid of failing in exams or in business and you focus too much on this thought, your stress and anxiety levels will increase. This anxiety will negatively affect your performance and will actually cause you to fail. In this case, because you are constantly focusing on the thought of failure, you will attract unwanted results into your life.

Finally, let’s consider the effects of mental looping and negative focus. Constantly replaying unwanted events or outcomes in our minds creates activation in certain areas of the brain (especially the prefrontal cortex and amygdala). These repeated negative thoughts become embedded in our minds, and the subconscious mind perceives them as “reality.” For example, when you go to a job interview and think, “I’m not going to get this job,” your body starts to act in accordance with this thought, and you attract the unwanted outcome into your life.

These examples show that our resistance and fear of unwanted situations actually strengthens them. Focusing on positive thoughts and feelings instead of resisting unwanted situations creates a positive flow and directs our energy in a healthier direction.
